Consciousness Really Explained?

This article proposes a cryptography-based thought experiment to explain why the astonishing hypothesis is indeed astonishing.  The article looks at the scientific idea of causation that emerges from Richard Feynman's philosophy of physics, showing how this metaphysics-lite approach to causation is flexible and powerful and can naturally incorporate consciousness, so putting physicalism into perspective.

In Search of Sense and Sensibility

The publication of Sense and Sensibility in 1811 saw the birth of the modern English novel, yet there is a remarkable antipathy towards this radical and revolutionary work.  This book sets out to find out why this is so, discovering that Sense and Sensibility offers a radical critique of our modern philosophy which has been systematically misunderstood, and this misunderstanding obscures the consistent philosophical programme that runs through all of Austen’s novels.  The more this programme is clarified the clearer it becomes just how radical a challenge it offers and Austen was perfectly placed to make this critique: she was writing at the end of the extended 18th century;  she was steeped in the classical/Christian philosophical tradition;  and she brought an almost unique understanding of the new in shaping the modern English novel—no minor contribution to the shaping of modernity.
